Gila Monster’s latest release, Lost Dog, belongs to a collective of creative outbursts that have resulted from this pandemic—a global depository that will be mined for decades. Lost Dog, though, is not a response to uncertainty. The conversation of fuzz and clean guitars and the disparate drum rhythms clasping to each other reek of the Psychedelic Furs hand-squeezing young love, or The Replacements vibrating over a musical accident, or the 2020s desperate for absolutely anything new. It’s a work that is confessional, and often, those confessions sound like the 1980s giving the 2020s advice and failing beautifully.
